Mathematical Engineering with Genomics and AI (MEGA) research group

The MEGA group develops machine learning architectures inspired by geometry and physics to build single-cell resolution models of Virtual Cells, Virtual Tissues, and Virtual Whole Organs, enabling large-scale in silico experimentation to accelerate biological discovery and tissue engineering.

Headed by Stathis Megas, the MEGA research group conducts research spanning literally all scales to drive progress in biomedicine. A central goal of the group is the development of Virtual Cells, Virtual Tissues, and ultimately Virtual Organs: computational models that can simulate how genetic, cellular, and environmental perturbations propagate through biological systems. To achieve this, we develop new generative and causal AI architectures for single-cell, spatial, multimodal, and imaging data. Our work has contributed methods for single-cell analysis, multimodal data integration, perturbation prediction, and spatial causal inference, including pioneering the first models capable of learning from genetic screens of spatial transcriptomics to predict tissue-level responses to localised interventions.
