Title: In silico neuroscience can be an enabler for system neuroscience
Abstract: In this talk, I will discuss opportunities that arise from these parallel technological leaps in AI (engineering) and neuroscience (reverse-engineering/science) and how they can be combined to accelerate insights into building blocks of biological intelligence. I will first discuss some systemic constraints on systems neuroscience and then argue that in silico neuroscience—AI-driven models bridging sensory environments, neural circuits, and behavior—can serve as an enabling technology to alleviate some of these constraints; not by replacing neuroscience, but by enhancing its toolset for scientific exploration. I will illustrate this with several examples of my research and the work of others. I will conclude by discussing challenges and requirements that will be needed to unlock the potential benefits of in silico neuroscience for systems neuroscience.
